Is the Lack of Project Management Skills a Major IT Issue For Organisations Globally?

The analysts think yes.

Meta Group:
A recent survey conducted at META Group's METAmorphosis 2003 conferences indicated that 77% of respondents believe lack of project and program management skills is a major IT issue. Moreover, preliminary results from another survey of project managers found that 16% of organizations have no project management capability, and 22% depend on ad hoc management by people who often have little training or experience. Only 2% of organizations require mandatory project management certification for their managers. (Source META Group, www.metagroup.com)

Kellogg School of Management
In a recent study of 130 Fortune 1000 companies, the Kellogg School of Management found that 41 percent lacked a centrally overseen IT budget, 46 percent did not track projects centrally and 68 percent did not track project benefits. KPMG
KPMG have recently undertaken a survey of 230 large organizations in 15 countries stretching across Asia Pacific and the western world.

This survey reveals in part the frequency and cost of project failures.

On a regional basis, between 56% to 66% of the organizations surveyed noted at least one failure in the preceding year. Most of the respondents were unable to define the costs arising from those failures. For those organisations that did have a measure of the costs involved, the losses per company per year ranged from USD1.9 million to USD10 million for those in Asia Pacific region.

We agree
Information Technology projects are at the heart of most strategic initiatives designed to create competitive advantage and sustainability. Poor project performance manifested by high cost over runs, late delivery and poor quality significantly affects the organisations overall performance. With the greater emphasis on corporate governance and scrutiny poor project performance of key technology based projects has a more become visible issue today. This has put a greater emphasis on the quality of project planning needed and a greater demand for experienced well-trained project managers.

Yes there is a shortage of well trained and experienced project managers in Asia Pacific region today and whilst we are seeing more people seeking to become certified as Project Management Professionals (PMP®) with the Project Management Institute there is however still too much reliance on inexperienced project managers and ad hoc use of methods and processes to manage key projects in both the public and private sectors.
